This past Sunday at New City we sang “Jesus I my Cross have Taken”. It’s an old hymn with a new tune written by “Indelible Grace”. You can watch them perform the song here.
The lyrics reflect our struggle to serve Jesus wholeheartedly in the face of fierce opposition and struggle – both internal and external.
Jesus, I my cross have taken,
All to leave and follow Thee.
Destitute, despised, forsaken,
Thou from hence my all shall be.
Perish every fond ambition,
All I’ve sought or hoped or known.
Yet how rich is my condition!
God and heaven are still my own.
Even though we don’t usually like to think about, Jesus did tell his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.” (Matt16:24)
Those are hard words to hear! I want to be a disciple and yet…
I would challenge you to face the tension between God’s call upon our lives and our continual shortcomings. Don’t run from this tension for this is where we see the power of God in our lives.
Cry out for mercy and bask in the blessings we have as a result of the finished work of Christ. And watch God show up in your life in the midst of opposition and struggle.
