Celebrate good times!

Last Friday was a special day for the Hatch family. June 12 was the date my daughter, Rahel, graduated from high school at Black Forrest Academy in Germany but it was also the date my parents, Jim and Jan Hatch, celebrated their IMG_006450th wedding anniversary. On some level, nothing significant actually happened on June 12th. Rahel didn’t pass any exams or write any essays. My parents spent the day together like they have done for close to 18,000 days.

What was significant was the celebration of a major life accomplishment. A milestone had been reached. A life marker was laid down. And this was worthy of a celebration. We need markers in life not to remember our accomplishments – we’re all pretty good at that – but to remember God’s faithfulness over the years.

50 YearsIn the book of Joshua, God tells him to pile twelve stones on the edge of the Jordan River after the people had passed through on dry land. Why?

“When your children ask in time to come, ‘What do those stones mean to you?’ then you shall tell them that the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord.” ~ Joshua 4:6b-7a

An 18 year old girl finishing 13 years of school in three different countries (US, UK and Germany)? Worthy of celebration! A couple still loving each other at 72 years old after 50 years of joy and pain together? Worthy of a celebration!

When you hit those milestones in your life, celebrate! It’s biblical to lay down a marker for life’s accomplishments. But remember that God has been faithfully working behind the scenes to bring you to this point in your life.471035_912256312166210_1281933111696763507_o

Have a look at those photos of your high school graduation or your marriage or your 20th, 30th, 40th, etc. birthday party. Thank God for his faithful in the past. Let this feed your faith. Because the same God who was with you during those past milestones will be with you into the future.
