So that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. Ephesians 3:17-19
We all have the desire to be loved but we have those nagging doubts.
We wonder – “Is God’s love really possible?”
We know our own quirks, mistakes, foibles, and sins. We desire for someone to know this yet still love us unconditionally. We have a hunger to be known, truly known, and at the same time truly accepted and loved.
We wonder – “If God knows me, will He love me?”
Paul knows that the people in Ephesus need the power of God to actually believe that God loves them. And not just love them as in – “I’ll put up with you and you’ll get to hang out with me in heaven.” Paul uses these spacial words – breadth, length, height, depth – but, of course, love is not physical item that can be measured with a ruler. Paul is making the point that there is no way we can measure God’s love for us.
This is why Paul prays that they would have the strength to comprehend God’s love – they need the power of God in order to truly know the love of God.
If we are united to Christ by faith, He still loves us. He knows the mess we’ve made – He knows the way we rebel against His rule – He knows the way we’ve failed to love those around us – we can’t hide from his gaze.
But if Christ is dwelling in your heart through faith – if you are united to him by confessing your need and placing your trust in the finished work of Jesus – then GOD LOVES YOU!!
And pray that God would give you strength to comprehend that fact.
