13  Then children were brought to him that he might lay his hands on them and pray. The disciples rebuked the people, 14 but Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.” 15 And he laid his hands on them and went away.              Matthew 19:13-15

Ready for the battle

Last week at the White City Kids Club we learned a new song called “I got my feet shod” which we sang for the parents on the last day at the BBQ.

I got my feet shod, With the preparation of peace
I got my belt of truth, I’ve got my sword of the spirit
My shield of faith, I’ve got my breastplate of righteousness
Helmet of salvation, I put on my armor
And I’m ready for the battle,
Ready for the battle.

When I was asked to preach yesterday at St. Michael’s in White City,  it was a nice surprise to find out my text was Ephesians 6:10-20 – the passage of scripture where this song was taken from.

The first thing we learn here in this passage is that we’re in a battle. That’s a fairly obvious point as the apostle Paul uses the illustration of a soldier to let us know that if you are in Christ, you need to be fighting. The assumption is that those who have faith in Jesus will be fighting a battle.

Paul doesn’t tell us that there are some super – Christians over there who are really in the battle but others just get to take it easy. Go for a holiday on the beach – wait around and then someday Jesus will come back to wake you up from your nap and say, “It’s time to go to heaven!”
No – everyone who claims the name of Jesus is in the battle.  A spiritual battle against the evil one.

How do you resist the devil? What is the first thing you put on here in verse 14 – “the belt of truth”. The “father of lies” (as Jesus calls Satan) doesn’t like the truth. The truth that Jesus has won the war. The truth that if your faith is in him, then you are united with Jesus and Satan does not posses you. The truth that God does have a glorious inheritance for his people when every tear will be wiped away and evil will be no more. That is the truth.

Where do you get this truth? The sword of the Spirit which is the word of God as Paul says in verse 17. We feed our faith by reading and then acting upon what’s in this book. And by praying as it says in verse 18 – “at all times in the Spirit” that God would give us understanding of the truth. That He would increase our faith. That He would give us strength by the power of the Holy Spirit as Paul says in verse 13 to “withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.”

Are you in a battle? Yes – not against flesh and blood but you are in a battle. But if you are united with Christ by faith– have no fear – God will not let you go – you will not be defeated for Jesus has won the war.

Crazy Edd’s tour of Shepherd’s Bush

This past week Edd Stock and I made a video for my home church, New City Fellowship, in Chattanooga, TN.  We wanted to give folks a basic idea of some of the highlights of the Shepherds Bush community. Edd has been working with me as a summer intern before he heads off to Cambridge in September.

We are obviously not professionals but it was fun to make.  Thanks to my friend, Tim Garrett, for the editing on this – you can check out his photobooth artwork here.
